DAY 6 OF 32

Giving Thanks

Rex Stump

READY

“Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18

SET

Monopoly, Uno, Mouse Trap, Kickball, and Dodgeball are just a few of my favorite childhood games. While playing one of those games, has anyone ever broken a rule or completely changed the rules? Were you frustrated?

Have you felt like COVID-19 changed the rules on us? We were living a normal life, and suddenly COVID-19 comes along and plays by its own rules. Someone changed the rules in the game of life!

In the NFL, when the coach thinks the official missed the call, he throws that red flag to challenge the decision that was made. Have you ever felt like throwing a red flag to God? We are upset, frustrated, and can’t figure out the “why” of all that has happened. Maybe we aren’t supposed to know the “why” right now.

Do you remember in school when you took a test, and the teacher would quietly sit at the front desk, overseeing a room full of anxious students, not offering a word of help? Maybe God is sitting on His throne, overseeing a world full of anxious people, just like a teacher. But God is not sitting quietly. He has given us His Spirit and His Word to guide us, comfort us and equip us. His presence calms us, and His Word guides us. God loves us and sent Jesus Christ to save us! That is truth and a promise that gives me peace.

First Thessalonians 5:18 gives us direction in how to respond! “Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” Be thankful IN ALL, not for all circumstances! There is much God has blessed me with and much that I am grateful for. How about you?

GO

  • How do you react when someone changes the rules?
  • Have you ever questioned God? If so, about what? About what?

WORKOUT

Psalm 106:1; Romans 8:35–39; John 14:16

OVERTIME

"Heavenly Father, I confess there are times when I’m confused and frustrated by the world I live in. Thank You for living in me and giving me hope and peace. Thank You for loving me. Help me not to complain but to give thanks in all circumstances. Amen."

About this Plan

EVERY

The EVERY FCA Devotional features a 31-day reading plan to help coaches and athletes develop a habit of reading the Bible daily and applying it to their lives. For a moment each day, we can dig deep into God's Word and pursue a relationship with Jesus Christ and His Kingdom.
