 <div class="label">4</div><div class="s1">Cain and Abel</div><div class="p">1Adam#4:1 Or The man made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.#4:1 Cain sounds like the Hebrew for brought forth or acquired. She said, &#8220;With the help of the Lord I have brought forth#4:1 Or have acquired a man.&#8221; 2Later she gave birth to his brother Abel.</div><div class="p">Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. 3In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. 4And Abel also brought an offering&#8212;fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, 5but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.</div><div class="p">6Then the Lord said to Cain, &#8220;Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? 7If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.&#8221;</div><div class="p">8Now Cain said to his brother Abel, &#8220;Let&#8217;s go out to the field.&#8221;#4:8 Samaritan Pentateuch, Septuagint, Vulgate and Syriac; Masoretic Text does not have &#8220;Let&#8217;s go out to the field.&#8221; While they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.</div><div class="p">9Then the Lord said to Cain, &#8220;Where is your brother Abel?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;I don&#8217;t know,&#8221; he replied. &#8220;Am I my brother&#8217;s keeper?&#8221;</div><div class="p">10The Lord said, &#8220;What have you done? Listen! Your brother&#8217;s blood cries out to me from the ground. 11Now you are under a curse and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother&#8217;s blood from your hand. 12When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.&#8221;</div><div class="p">13Cain said to the Lord, &#8220;My punishment is more than I can bear. 14Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence; I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.&#8221;</div><div class="p">15But the Lord said to him, &#8220;Not so#4:15 Septuagint, Vulgate and Syriac; Hebrew Very well; anyone who kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.&#8221; Then the Lord put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him. 16So Cain went out from the Lord&#8217;s presence and lived in the land of Nod,#4:16 Nod means wandering (see verses 12 and 14). east of Eden.</div><div class="p">17Cain made love to his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Enoch. Cain was then building a city, and he named it after his son Enoch. 18To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael was the father of Methushael, and Methushael was the father of Lamech.</div><div class="p">19Lamech married two women, one named Adah and the other Zillah. 20Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock. 21His brother&#8217;s name was Jubal; he was the father of all who play stringed instruments and pipes. 22Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of#4:22 Or who instructed all who work in bronze and iron. Tubal-Cain&#8217;s sister was Naamah.</div><div class="p">23Lamech said to his wives,</div><div class="q1">&#8220;Adah and Zillah, listen to me;</div><div class="q2">wives of Lamech, hear my words.</div><div class="q1">I have killed a man for wounding me,</div><div class="q2">a young man for injuring me.</div><div class="q1">24If Cain is avenged seven times,</div><div class="q2">then Lamech seventy-seven times.&#8221;</div><div class="p">25Adam made love to his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth,#4:25 Seth probably means granted. saying, &#8220;God has granted me another child in place of Abel, since Cain killed him.&#8221; 26Seth also had a son, and he named him Enosh.</div><div class="p">At that time people began to call on#4:26 Or to proclaim the name of the Lord.</div>

 <div class="label">7</div><div class="s1">The Guilt Offering</div><div class="p">1&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;These are the regulations for the guilt offering, which is most holy: 2The guilt offering is to be slaughtered in the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered, and its blood is to be splashed against the sides of the altar. 3All its fat shall be offered: the fat tail and the fat that covers the internal organs, 4both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which is to be removed with the kidneys. 5The priest shall burn them on the altar as a food offering presented to the Lord. It is a guilt offering. 6Any male in a priest&#8217;s family may eat it, but it must be eaten in the sanctuary area; it is most holy.</div><div class="p">7&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;The same law applies to both the sin offering#7:7 Or purification offering; also in verse 37 and the guilt offering: They belong to the priest who makes atonement with them. 8The priest who offers a burnt offering for anyone may keep its hide for himself. 9Every grain offering baked in an oven or cooked in a pan or on a griddle belongs to the priest who offers it, 10and every grain offering, whether mixed with olive oil or dry, belongs equally to all the sons of Aaron.</div><div class="s1">The Fellowship Offering</div><div class="p">11&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;These are the regulations for the fellowship offering anyone may present to the Lord:</div><div class="p">12&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If they offer it as an expression of thankfulness, then along with this thank offering they are to offer thick loaves made without yeast and with olive oil mixed in, thin loaves made without yeast and brushed with oil, and thick loaves of the finest flour well-kneaded and with oil mixed in. 13Along with their fellowship offering of thanksgiving they are to present an offering with thick loaves of bread made with yeast. 14They are to bring one of each kind as an offering, a contribution to the Lord; it belongs to the priest who splashes the blood of the fellowship offering against the altar. 15The meat of their fellowship offering of thanksgiving must be eaten on the day it is offered; they must leave none of it till morning.</div><div class="p">16&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If, however, their offering is the result of a vow or is a freewill offering, the sacrifice shall be eaten on the day they offer it, but anything left over may be eaten on the next day. 17Any meat of the sacrifice left over till the third day must be burned up. 18If any meat of the fellowship offering is eaten on the third day, the one who offered it will not be accepted. It will not be reckoned to their credit, for it has become impure; the person who eats any of it will be held responsible.</div><div class="p">19&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;Meat that touches anything ceremonially unclean must not be eaten; it must be burned up. As for other meat, anyone ceremonially clean may eat it. 20But if anyone who is unclean eats any meat of the fellowship offering belonging to the Lord, they must be cut off from their people. 21Anyone who touches something unclean&#8212;whether human uncleanness or an unclean animal or any unclean creature that moves along the ground#7:21 A few Hebrew manuscripts, Samaritan Pentateuch, Syriac and Targum (see 5:2); most Hebrew manuscripts any unclean, detestable thing&#8212;and then eats any of the meat of the fellowship offering belonging to the Lord must be cut off from their people.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Eating Fat and Blood Forbidden</div><div class="p">22The Lord said to Moses, 23&#8220;Say to the Israelites: &#8216;Do not eat any of the fat of cattle, sheep or goats. 24The fat of an animal found dead or torn by wild animals may be used for any other purpose, but you must not eat it. 25Anyone who eats the fat of an animal from which a food offering may be#7:25 Or offering is presented to the Lord must be cut off from their people. 26And wherever you live, you must not eat the blood of any bird or animal. 27Anyone who eats blood must be cut off from their people.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Priests&#8217; Share</div><div class="p">28The Lord said to Moses, 29&#8220;Say to the Israelites: &#8216;Anyone who brings a fellowship offering to the Lord is to bring part of it as their sacrifice to the Lord. 30With their own hands they are to present the food offering to the Lord; they are to bring the fat, together with the breast, and wave the breast before the Lord as a wave offering. 31The priest shall burn the fat on the altar, but the breast belongs to Aaron and his sons. 32You are to give the right thigh of your fellowship offerings to the priest as a contribution. 33The son of Aaron who offers the blood and the fat of the fellowship offering shall have the right thigh as his share. 34From the fellowship offerings of the Israelites, I have taken the breast that is waved and the thigh that is presented and have given them to Aaron the priest and his sons as their perpetual share from the Israelites.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;</div><div class="p">35This is the portion of the food offerings presented to the Lord that were allotted to Aaron and his sons on the day they were presented to serve the Lord as priests. 36On the day they were anointed, the Lord commanded that the Israelites give this to them as their perpetual share for the generations to come.</div><div class="p">37These, then, are the regulations for the burnt offering, the grain offering, the sin offering, the guilt offering, the ordination offering and the fellowship offering, 38which the Lord gave Moses at Mount Sinai in the Desert of Sinai on the day he commanded the Israelites to bring their offerings to the Lord.</div>

 <div class="label">8</div><div class="s1">The Ordination of Aaron and His Sons</div><div class="p">1The Lord said to Moses, 2&#8220;Bring Aaron and his sons, their garments, the anointing oil, the bull for the sin offering,#8:2 Or purification offering; also in verse 14 the two rams and the basket containing bread made without yeast, 3and gather the entire assembly at the entrance to the tent of meeting.&#8221; 4Moses did as the Lord commanded him, and the assembly gathered at the entrance to the tent of meeting.</div><div class="p">5Moses said to the assembly, &#8220;This is what the Lord has commanded to be done.&#8221; 6Then Moses brought Aaron and his sons forward and washed them with water. 7He put the tunic on Aaron, tied the sash around him, clothed him with the robe and put the ephod on him. He also fastened the ephod with a decorative waistband, which he tied around him. 8He placed the breastpiece on him and put the Urim and Thummim in the breastpiece. 9Then he placed the turban on Aaron&#8217;s head and set the gold plate, the sacred emblem, on the front of it, as the Lord commanded Moses.</div><div class="p">10Then Moses took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and everything in it, and so consecrated them. 11He sprinkled some of the oil on the altar seven times, anointing the altar and all its utensils and the basin with its stand, to consecrate them. 12He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron&#8217;s head and anointed him to consecrate him. 13Then he brought Aaron&#8217;s sons forward, put tunics on them, tied sashes around them and fastened caps on them, as the Lord commanded Moses.</div><div class="p">14He then presented the bull for the sin offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. 15Moses slaughtered the bull and took some of the blood, and with his finger he put it on all the horns of the altar to purify the altar. He poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. So he consecrated it to make atonement for it. 16Moses also took all the fat around the internal organs, the long lobe of the liver, and both kidneys and their fat, and burned it on the altar. 17But the bull with its hide and its flesh and its intestines he burned up outside the camp, as the Lord commanded Moses.</div><div class="p">18He then presented the ram for the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. 19Then Moses slaughtered the ram and splashed the blood against the sides of the altar. 20He cut the ram into pieces and burned the head, the pieces and the fat. 21He washed the internal organs and the legs with water and burned the whole ram on the altar. It was a burnt offering, a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses.</div><div class="p">22He then presented the other ram, the ram for the ordination, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. 23Moses slaughtered the ram and took some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron&#8217;s right ear, on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot. 24Moses also brought Aaron&#8217;s sons forward and put some of the blood on the lobes of their right ears, on the thumbs of their right hands and on the big toes of their right feet. Then he splashed blood against the sides of the altar. 25After that, he took the fat, the fat tail, all the fat around the internal organs, the long lobe of the liver, both kidneys and their fat and the right thigh. 26And from the basket of bread made without yeast, which was before the Lord, he took one thick loaf, one thick loaf with olive oil mixed in, and one thin loaf, and he put these on the fat portions and on the right thigh. 27He put all these in the hands of Aaron and his sons, and they waved them before the Lord as a wave offering. 28Then Moses took them from their hands and burned them on the altar on top of the burnt offering as an ordination offering, a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord. 29Moses also took the breast, which was his share of the ordination ram, and waved it before the Lord as a wave offering, as the Lord commanded Moses.</div><div class="p">30Then Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood from the altar and sprinkled them on Aaron and his garments and on his sons and their garments. So he consecrated Aaron and his garments and his sons and their garments.</div><div class="p">31Moses then said to Aaron and his sons, &#8220;Cook the meat at the entrance to the tent of meeting and eat it there with the bread from the basket of ordination offerings, as I was commanded: &#8216;Aaron and his sons are to eat it.&#8217; 32Then burn up the rest of the meat and the bread. 33Do not leave the entrance to the tent of meeting for seven days, until the days of your ordination are completed, for your ordination will last seven days. 34What has been done today was commanded by the Lord to make atonement for you. 35You must stay at the entrance to the tent of meeting day and night for seven days and do what the Lord requires, so you will not die; for that is what I have been commanded.&#8221;</div><div class="p">36So Aaron and his sons did everything the Lord commanded through Moses.</div>

 <div class="label">4</div><div class="s1">Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness</div><div class="p">1Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted#4:1 The Greek for tempted can also mean tested. by the devil. 2After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3The tempter came to him and said, &#8220;If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.&#8221;</div><div class="p">4Jesus answered, &#8220;It is written: &#8216;Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.&#8217;#4:4 Deut. 8:3&#8221;</div><div class="p">5Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6&#8220;If you are the Son of God,&#8221; he said, &#8220;throw yourself down. For it is written:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;He will command his angels concerning you,</div><div class="q2">and they will lift you up in their hands,</div><div class="q2">so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.&#8217;#4:6 Psalm 91:11,12&#8221;</div><div class="p">7Jesus answered him, &#8220;It is also written: &#8216;Do not put the Lord your God to the test.&#8217;#4:7 Deut. 6:16&#8221;</div><div class="p">8Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9&#8220;All this I will give you,&#8221; he said, &#8220;if you will bow down and worship me.&#8221;</div><div class="p">10Jesus said to him, &#8220;Away from me, Satan! For it is written: &#8216;Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.&#8217;#4:10 Deut. 6:13&#8221;</div><div class="p">11Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Begins to Preach</div><div class="p">12When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee. 13Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali&#8212; 14to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:</div><div class="q1">15&#8220;Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,</div><div class="q2">the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,</div><div class="q2">Galilee of the Gentiles&#8212;</div><div class="q1">16the people living in darkness</div><div class="q2">have seen a great light;</div><div class="q1">on those living in the land of the shadow of death</div><div class="q2">a light has dawned.&#8221;#4:16 Isaiah 9:1,2</div><div class="p">17From that time on Jesus began to preach, &#8220;Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus Calls His First Disciples</div><div class="p">18As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19&#8220;Come, follow me,&#8221; Jesus said, &#8220;and I will send you out to fish for people.&#8221; 20At once they left their nets and followed him.</div><div class="p">21Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.</div><div class="s1">Jesus Heals the Sick</div><div class="p">23Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people. 24News about him spread all over Syria, and people brought to him all who were ill with various diseases, those suffering severe pain, the demon-possessed, those having seizures, and the paralyzed; and he healed them. 25Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis,#4:25 That is, the Ten Cities Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan followed him.</div>
