Peace
John 14:27 "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid."
Here we end our study on peace. For some, life is a raging river of stress, depression, and worry, and therefore, peace escapes them. But if you read this whole chapter or at least verses 15-31, you will see Jesus talks about the coming of the Holy Spirit.
Let's breakdown the verse here a bit
- Peace I leave with you; Jesus is about to leave the disciples.
- My peace I give to you; Jesus is blessing those He's speaking to.
- Not as the world gives do I give to you; He's talking about eternal peace, everlasting peace, and peace that goes beyond understanding.
- Let not your hearts be troubled. In a world full of nervous nellies, Jesus knew we needed to hear calming words from the Master about worry.
- Neither let them be afraid; He doubles down here as you can almost hear those in the crowd saying things like, "but what if..."
I can see myself in the crowd that Jesus is talking to and hearing Him speak about peace, troubles, and fear. I would be like, "wait, why did He say troubles and afraid? Does He know something that He's not telling us? I thought Jesus was taking all of that away. When will there be trouble?
Did He say He was leaving? Where's He going? If we go with Him, will there not be troubles and fear?"
Oh, the questions I would have. I have questions 2,000 years later, but that is the peace Jesus talked about when He said, "my peace I give to you." This is a peace that we could have even during that raging river of stress, depression, and worry. I know you're saying, "but you don't know what I'm going through," and you'd be right. But Jesus does. In my head, when Jesus said, "my peace, I leave you," I see him breaking the fourth wall like Deadpool and looking right at me.
"My peace I leave you." He's looking right at you as well.
Uncommen Questions:
1. Do you have peace?
2. Do you let your heart get troubled? If so, what do you do about it?
3. When things go sideways, do you go to prayer?
Uncommen Challenge:
I challenge us all to embrace the peace Jesus is talking about in this scripture. I know there will be days when that seems impossible, but that's when we need to get on our knees. We need to do business with God about our situations.
