Adjust Your Unhealthy Beliefs
A belief system is how you think about yourself in light of your circumstances and relationships. We have both healthy and unhealthy belief systems.
Healthy belief systems are both formed and informed by God's Spirit and His Word. This is what Jesus meant when He said in John 8:32, "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Unhealthy belief systems mean our fundamental beliefs aren't built upon the foundation of truth.
I have good news: we can change our unhealthy belief systems!
How? By systematically striking at the root of those unhealthy belief systems that take us down roads of pain, misery, and possible destruction.
While we can't snap our fingers and change them all instantly, we can start with the most painful first.
How do we find them? One way is to allow God to search our places of emotional pain.
Take a few minutes to identify some of your more painful emotions right now.
This exercise will help you connect them with the unhealthy belief system that might be causing it. Then, write down the healthy belief system God's Spirit and Word are leading you to replace it with. Now, begin to build your healthy belief system based on a passage of Scripture.
Below is an example:
Painful Emotion
I'm all alone.
Unhealthy Belief System
God is not a good Father. Fathers aren't good because mine was mean, cold, or abandoned my family. So God must be like that.
Healthy Belief System
God is the perfect Father who: provides, gives good gifts, loves me, is kind, never leaves, and won't disappoint me.
(Matthew 6:33, Matthew 7:11, John 3:16, Titus 3:4)
Healthy belief systems produce healthy emotions. Continue to dismantle your faulty belief systems and let God's truth set you free.
As you engage with God’s word:
● What unhealthy belief systems are causing me the most pain?
● What is God saying to me?
● What do I need to do about it?
After you reflect on these questions, bring everything to God in prayer.
