Jesus is stronger than demons

“And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, ‘What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.’” (Mark 1:27)

When Jesus is teaching and healing, we often read about demon-possessed people coming to Him and verbally attacking Him. They know who Jesus is and cry out His Name: “the Holy One of God” and “Son of the Most High God.” But Jesus strictly orders them not to make Him known. He does not want them to be His messengers! He tells the demons to come out of the people they possess — and they obey Him.

These evil spirits possessing people are servants of Satan. They know that Jesus has declared war on them and will ultimately destroy them. Therefore, Jesus’ ministry evokes agitation in the spiritual world. We read more about demon-possessed people in the stories about Jesus than anywhere else in the whole Bible. Demon possession did exist before Jesus became man and does exist after His resurrection, but it was far more frequent in Jesus’ day since the battle was coming to a climax. People were amazed to see that Jesus was stronger than the unclean spirits. This made clear that He was not an “ordinary human.” He had extraordinary spiritual power.
