The Send: A Life of Christ-Like Action

DAY 2 OF 30

Today, we will read about the start of Jesus’ ministry. His announcement that God’s kingdom has come near isn’t just a message; it’s a mission he begins to enact immediately. Mark introduces some key themes we will want to track in these scenes as we study this book. In particular, pay attention to:

1. The cost of discipleship: Through Jesus’ teachings on discipleship and the disciples’ struggle to understand who Jesus is and what it means to follow him, Mark reveals that the true nature of discipleship is sacrificial service modeled after the cross.

2. Spiritual conflict: From the moment of Jesus’ baptism, he has been in battle with the demonic powers that have taken God’s creation captive (1:12-13). Jesus’ first major act of ministry is freeing a man from an impure spirit (1:21-28). His conflict with these powers will continue to escalate as he takes back territory for God’s kingdom.

3. The question of Jesus’ identity: Mark highlights the confusion surrounding Jesus’ public ministry. Notice how the disciples, crowds, religious leaders, Romans, and even demons perceive and respond to Jesus. At this point in the story, the demons are the only ones recognizing Jesus for who he is.
