After a close presidential race in 1960, President John F. Kennedy gave a stirring inaugural address. He called for unity, quoting Isaiah 58: "Let both sides unite to heed in all corners of the earth the command of Isaiah--to 'undo the heavy burdens... (and) let the oppressed go free.'" He also used language from Romans 12 to call for perseverance in the face of struggle.
