"A Hatred for the Unclean and Anything Dead"

God’s statement to affirm life and forgiveness permeated through the encampment. The scene that followed must have been a spectacle. Families emerged from their homes with a little spring in their step. The community took on a certain pleasing odor. Though there remained a greater stench of blood in the air due to the bloodshed, still morale and thankful offerings, and the odor of forgiveness filled the heart. Though the Israelites soon traversed back into their dismay, their hearts were now full and grateful for the opportunity to simply live and see another day.

This is the simplicity that God wants for his people under his authority. He wants forgiveness to envelope them. He wants the stench of his sacrifice to bleed into hearts, and that out from his people will waft a beautiful aroma of contentment. He does not want Israel worrying about the next step. He does not desire for them to fret over or figure out what the next phase of the journey will hold. He simply wants them to live in the simple embrace of each day; knowing that their days are numbered and that they are blessed by the opportunity of experiencing a new sunrise each morning.

Not only does he remind them about the nature of his forgiveness and grace, but he explains to them why he was so passionate about them submitting to his authority. It is not only that they experience abundant life, but that they also avoid impending death and defilement. 

As you consider Numbers 19, hear the plea of a loving God who hates death and anything impure—Leviticus makes mention of steering clear of unclean things over 85 times. God cares about our safety in purity so much so that he allowed his Son to die to rescue his people from both. Consider your attitude toward “dead things” or anything that can steal your joy and life in Christ. Do you carry an intensity to be pure, holy, and free as your heavenly Father is free?
