Unpack This...Taking Sin SeriouslySample
Concerned NFL Players
During the 2020 COVID pandemic, the excitement surrounding NFL training camps starting up was quickly subdued when the biggest stars in the game went on social media to communicate their need for a proper safety protocols agreement.
NFL players and owners couldn’t ignore the health and safety risks involved in returning to the field, so an effective protection plan was considered.
Our physical health is very important, but we can't neglect the seriousness of following and implementing “safety protocols” when it comes to our spiritual health…and the effect of sin.
As followers of Jesus, do we have the same level of concern for guarding against sin that we do for guarding against possible physical illnesses?
Sin wreaks havoc on our lives when we ignore warnings and don’t take the proper safety measures seriously. We have to plan and prepare for how we’re going to combat the sin that’s threatening to destroy us.
When we receive Jesus’ grace and salvation because of the cross, we no longer face the eternal punishment of death. But as long as we're living in this broken world, we're battling against sin and the forces of evil.
Thankfully, God gives us His Spirit and power to help us avoid giving in to sin. Each day, however, we have to decide to follow Him and His “safety protocols” to avoid unnecessary harm.
Galatians 5:16 states, "But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh."
Proverbs 4:23 tells us, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."
Finally, Proverbs 27:12 reminds us, “The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the simple go on and suffer for it.”
Today, when considering the precautions players have taken to guard against a potential health concern, let’s be challenged to take sin seriously. Let's walk in the Spirit...guard our hearts...and avoid situations that put us at greater risk.
I’m Bryce Johnson and you can UNPACK that!
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I admit to being concerned about my physical health, but help me be more aware of my soul’s health. Please give me the strength to avoid sin and forgive me for the sin I’ve allowed into my life. Thank you for giving me Your Spirit to guide and protect me, and for Your grace, mercy, and love. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
