Exploring Forgiveness Through Film

DAY 1 OF 5

Big Hero

In the movie “Big Hero 6,” a boy named Hiro and his healthcare robot Baymax are attempting to find a test pod that was sucked through a portal into another dimension. The pod contains a girl named Abigail. And if she is not returned to her own dimension, Abigail will die.

Hiro and Baymax enter the portal and locate the pod with Abigail. As they attempt to move her back through the portal, Baymax is damaged. He believes he can save Abigail and Hiro, but that means he can’t save himself. But Baymax can’t perform the action unless Hiro tells him, “I am satisfied with my care.” Baymax convinces Hiro that this is the only way to save Abigail, so Hiro chokes through the phrase, and Baymax launches Hiro and the pod with Abigail back to the safety of their own dimension.

“There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” - John 15:13 (NLT)

We all need a hero like Baymax. Someone who will lay down his life for a friend. And the good news is – we do! His name is Jesus. God has always desired to be in relationship with us. Unfortunately, we sin, and sin is something that God cannot tolerate. In order to restore our relationship with God, a payment for sin has to be made. And according to Romans 6:23, the payment for sin is death. So God sent Jesus, his only son, to earth to die on a cross to pay for our sins so that our relationship with God would be restored. Jesus laid down his life for ours - we are saved - he truly is our Big Hero.

Jesus’ sacrifice secures our place as sons and daughters of our heavenly Father and gives us a place forever in Heaven. But just as Baymax could not save Hiro until Hiro accepted the gift, the same principle applies to us. To secure a place with God in Heaven, you have to have a conversation with God. Here’s what you need to talk about…

• Admit to him that you have sinned.

Romans 3:23 (NLT) - “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.”

• Let him know that you believe Jesus died for your sins.

Romans 5:8 - "But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners."

• Accept his gift of forgiveness and start a new life as a member of God’s family.

Romans 10:9 - “If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Day 2

About this Plan

Exploring Forgiveness Through Film

Sometimes it's easier to explore a deep subject when we can see it through the lens of a film we love. This 5-Day plan pairs biblical truths on forgiveness with the stories from popular movies to give you a new perspective on the importance of understanding forgiveness, accepting forgiveness, and offering forgiveness.
