Worthy: Embracing Your Identity in ChristSample
What defines you? Take a moment to think about what comes to mind when you hear this question.
Do you think of your relationships?
Your skills?
Your occupation?
Your likes and dislikes?
Identity can be rooted in many things, but it is important for our identity to be rooted in the right thing. Knowing who we are shapes our character, values, and how we navigate the world. Whether you know it or not, you make hundreds of decisions a day that are rooted in who you believe yourself to be.
If you believe you are capable, you will decide to take on a challenging new project. If you believe you are a failure, you might avoid taking such a big risk. If you believe you are worthy of love and joy, you will enjoy these things when they come your way. If you believe you are unworthy, you will avoid or be skeptical of them. Identity matters—more than you probably know.
The biggest reason identity matters is that an improper understanding of our identity can distort our worldview and lead us to behave contrary to the way we were designed. When we don’t know the identity that we are given by God, then we will live contrary to it. We will miss out on the security, peace, and joy that come from living in accordance with who we truly are.
To understand what defines us, we must look to our Creator—God. Though we try to define ourselves, it is only God who truly knows who we are, inside and out. He uniquely designed us. He intimately knows us. And in Christ, He has given us a glorious new identity. Join us over the next four days of this plan as we explore who God says believers are in Christ and what that means for our everyday lives.
Reflect and Respond
Thank God that He has given you a new identity in Christ.
Pray that God would help you to understand your identity in Christ and live in the freedom that comes from that new identity.
