It’s probably safe to say that John 3:16 is the most famous passage in the Bible. If you heard someone reading it, chances are you might find yourself reciting along. But just because it’s well-known by many doesn’t mean it’s understood by everyone. Just like a popular song lyric, you might know every word . . . but the meaning may still be a mystery to you, even as you sing along.
So, how about you? Do you believe it is the truth about God’s love for yourself?
When you slow down and read the passage, it's easy to see why it is so famous. The message God wants shouted from the rooftops is wrapped up into these few, simple words.
This verse reminds us that God has not abandoned us to our struggles and biggest fears. There is a plan and a great purpose to it all. There is love that conquers even the most damaging hate. And, there is a savior, Jesus, who came for all.
Our stories may look different, but we all need rescuing. You might have experienced pain, made mistakes, been hurt by others, and let others down. The good news is, God has not abandoned us to the mess we have made. The love of God is on its greatest display in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
So, here’s the simple truth: God loves you, and Jesus came to give you life, and the promise of true hope.
