The Healing Jesus: An Advent Devotional to Encourage Anybody and EverybodySample
JAMES: THE ONE WHO WAS STEADFAST
I'm James, one of Jesus's half-brothers. We learned so much from Jesus, but the one thing that I will never forget is his steadfast love. That steadfast love returned to me repeatedly as I led the church in Jerusalem. And boy, I needed to be reminded of that often! We had one tragedy after another happen. First, a terrible famine occurred. That created disastrous poverty throughout the land. No matter where we turned, someone was desperate for food and basic needs. It was overwhelming! I tried to remember what Jesus had taught us and remained steadfast. I tried to have wisdom and courage as I led that little but mighty church.
It wasn't just what I said. Jesus challenged me on how I should live. It was never to shame me or to make Himself better. He lowered himself to serve us. It always came from a place of kindness and gentleness. He was exceptionally patient, and he needed to be to lead me. I was a slow learner! But he never gave up. I am grateful for the challenges he put before me.
This is why I want to challenge others. Jesus's Sermon on the Mount comes back to me again and again. I grew up reading Proverbs until I practically had it memorized. Growing up with Jesus and the teachings from the temple made an impression on me. They have shaped who I am today. Following Jesus all starts with wisdom. You have to be open to what God wants to teach you. It's not natural, but it's so simple. Love God, love others. That's it!
I had hard times, but God is good despite my circumstances. He is trustworthy. You can count on Him no matter what comes your way. You can face your suffering with total trust. Listen to God's Word. Soak up those precious words like a sponge. They are life-giving! But also, do what it says. (I know, easier said than done!)
I want everyone to know that Jesus freed us to love God and each other. Jesus modeled for us what discipleship is: He served the poor and always spoke kindly but was devoted to God alone. I am content with whatever comes because I know Jesus is by my side.
Jesus is healing your lack of trust and will help you to remain loyal and trustworthy.
