Weird Ideas: God and the Universe

DAY 4 OF 5

That opening line doesn’t stop with “I believe in God the Father Almighty.” It also claims he’s the “maker of heaven and earth.” A later statement of faith, called the Nicene Creed, will expand on the phrase with “of all things visible and invisible.”

If there is no creator, we are here by random chance. There is nothing special about you or your life beyond what you choose to make special personally. There is no greater purpose. No destiny. No greater meaning. You are here simply because you’re lucky. Random chance worked in your favor. At best, life is about trying to manipulate probability to your favor for as long as you can until you die.

Christians have a weird idea. The universe doesn’t exist by accident. God made it. Furthermore, your life is not a random blip. You have intrinsic worth and specialness. You have purpose. And you have a destiny. When asked what is the purpose of life, the Westminster Catechism will say: To glorify God and enjoy him forever (Q.1). That’s a long time.

At the foundational level, God stands behind all that exists. That includes you. God created you to know him, to love him, and to be with him forever. A life rooted in that is worth living.

About this Plan

Weird Ideas: God and the Universe

Christians are different. They can’t help it. When you’re in Christ and filled with the Spirit, it changes you. This leads to weird ideas and alternate beliefs about reality. This series of 5-day plans uses classic Christian Creeds as a vehicle to explain the Christian worldview compared to the world’s, and help us see reality through Jesus’s eyes.
