Christ in the Old Testament: A 5-Day Advent Reading PlanSample
Seeing Jesus in Genesis
Throughout Genesis, we see echoes of the coming Savior:
- The First Adam in Genesis 3 is reflected in the Second Adam in Romans 5
- The Protoevangelium (or "first gospel") of that same chapter is fulfilled in 1 John 3
- Abel’s blood cries out for justice in Genesis 4, while Jesus’s blood proclaims forgiveness in Hebrews 12:24
- Abraham is given a promise in Genesis 12 that is fulfilled in Jesus in Galatians 3
- Isaac is almost sacrificed by his father in Genesis 22, then Christ is crucified in John 19
- Joseph forgave his brother in Genesis 45 as Jesus forgives us all in Luke 23
- Joseph saved the people from famine in Genesis 45, while Jesus saves us from sin in Acts 2
- Joseph’s suffering in Genesis 50 is seen again in Jesus’s suffering in Acts 2
Through this understanding, we are able to see the intentionality of Scripture from the very beginning. In what ways does this allow us to better appreciate the story of Advent?
