The Power of Relationships in Life
"Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor."
— Romans 12:10 (ESV)
What makes a great family member, sibling, or friend? The most obvious answer is one who is unselfish. The greatest struggle going on in our relationships is the struggle between caring about oneself or caring about others.
Selfishness destroys relationships. It is the number one cause of conflict, arguments, divorce, and even war. James 4:1 (NIV) says, "What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? Every trouble starts because of self-centeredness."
As we become more and more filled with God’s love, wisdom, and discernment, we will find ourselves better able to look out for the interests of others, and this will help our relationships grow and improve. Philippians 2:4 (TPT) says, "Abandon every display of selfishness. Possess a greater concern for what matters to others instead of your own interests." In seeking to be selfless, which brings out the best in us, we also want to make sure that we are helping others to become their best selves as well.
Remember, our time on this earth is well spent as we grow into the likeness of Christ. We must become aware of our own growth and also aware of those around us. This is how we create a healthy environment where we can thrive and enjoy strong, healthy, balanced, and godly relationships. As we grow in His Word, blessings await us! We can have joy, peace, balance, and great love in our marriage, family, friendships, and more.
Decide today to put your relationship with God first and allow Him to help you to be loving and unselfish toward others.
Here are three Bible-based affirmations for today:
I AM loved by my Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit. I AM filled with God’s love for all people. I AM unselfish and loving toward others.
Remember, we capitalize the I AM to demonstrate our awareness that Christ in us gives us everything we need. We are nothing without Him.
