Spiritual Leadership for Parents Of: Teenagers

DAY 4 OF 5

Conflict

Conflict is an inevitable part of life. Whether in relationships, at school, or in the workplace, it's a challenge we all face. As parents, it's our responsibility to guide our teenagers in learning how to navigate CONFLICT with wisdom and grace.

Teaching teenagers how to navigate conflict is not just about resolving arguments or disagreements; it's about imparting a valuable life skill that will serve them well in the years to come. The Bible encourages us in Proverbs 15:1, "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." This verse reminds us that our response in times of conflict can either escalate the situation or bring about a resolution.

First and foremost, we must teach our teenagers the importance of effective communication. Encourage them to express their thoughts and feelings respectfully and honestly. The ability to listen actively, seeking to understand the other person's perspective, is equally vital. Proverbs 18:13 advises us, "If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame." By listening carefully, they can gain insights that may lead to peaceful resolutions.

Empathy is a cornerstone of conflict resolution. Help your teenagers understand the emotions and concerns of others involved in the conflict. This understanding allows them to approach the situation with compassion, which can defuse tension and build bridges.

It's also important to guide them in seeking common ground. While differences in opinions and desires are natural, there are often shared goals or values that can serve as a foundation for finding solutions. Encourage them to look for areas of agreement and build upon them.

Teach your teenagers the significance of forgiveness. The Bible teaches us in Colossians 3:13, "Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you." Forgiveness is not about condoning wrongdoings, but about releasing the burden of anger and resentment, allowing healing to take place.

Above all, model these conflict resolution skills in your own interactions. Let your teenagers witness how you handle disagreements and conflicts with grace and love. Your example will be a powerful teacher.

In a world filled with strife and discord, equipping our teenagers with the ability to navigate conflict with grace is a precious gift. By teaching them effective communication, empathy, seeking common ground, and forgiveness, we prepare them to handle the challenges of life with wisdom and humility.
