 <div class="p">1In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar&#8212;when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene&#8212; 2during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 4As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;A voice of one calling in the wilderness,</div><div class="q1">&#8216;Prepare the way for the Lord,</div><div class="q2">make straight paths for him.</div><div class="q1"></div>

 <div class="p">1Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2where for forty days he was tempted#4:2 The Greek for tempted can also mean tested. by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.</div><div class="p">3The devil said to him, &#8220;If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread.&#8221;</div><div class="p">4Jesus answered, &#8220;It is written: &#8216;Man shall not live on bread alone.&#8217;#4:4 Deut. 8:3&#8221;</div><div class="p">5The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6And he said to him, &#8220;I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7If you worship me, it will all be yours.&#8221;</div><div class="p">8Jesus answered, &#8220;It is written: &#8216;Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.&#8217;#4:8 Deut. 6:13&#8221;</div><div class="p">9The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. &#8220;If you are the Son of God,&#8221; he said, &#8220;throw yourself down from here. 10For it is written:</div><div class="q1">&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;He will command his angels concerning you</div><div class="q2">to guard you carefully;</div><div class="q1">11they will lift you up in their hands,</div><div class="q2">so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.&#8217;#4:11 Psalm 91:11,12&#8221;</div><div class="p">12Jesus answered, &#8220;It is said: &#8216;Do not put the Lord your God to the test.&#8217;#4:12 Deut. 6:16&#8221;</div><div class="p">13When the devil had finished all this tempting, he left him until an opportune time.</div>

 <div class="p">19Now this was John&#8217;s testimony when the Jewish leaders#1:19 The Greek term traditionally translated the Jews (hoi Ioudaioi) refers here and elsewhere in John&#8217;s Gospel to those Jewish leaders who opposed Jesus; also in 5:10, 15,16; 7:1,11,13; 9:22; 18:14,28,36; 19:7,12,31,38; 20:19. in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him who he was. 20He did not fail to confess, but confessed freely, &#8220;I am not the Messiah.&#8221;</div><div class="p">21They asked him, &#8220;Then who are you? Are you Elijah?&#8221;</div><div class="p">He said, &#8220;I am not.&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;Are you the Prophet?&#8221;</div><div class="p">He answered, &#8220;No.&#8221;</div><div class="p">22Finally they said, &#8220;Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?&#8221;</div><div class="p">23John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, &#8220;I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, &#8216;Make straight the way for the Lord.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221;#1:23 Isaiah 40:3</div><div class="p">24Now the Pharisees who had been sent 25questioned him, &#8220;Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?&#8221;</div><div class="p">26&#8220;I baptize with#1:26 Or in; also in verses 31 and 33 (twice) water,&#8221; John replied, &#8220;but among you stands one you do not know. 27He is the one who comes after me, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.&#8221;</div><div class="p">28This all happened at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was baptizing.</div><div class="s1">John Testifies About Jesus</div><div class="p">29The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, &#8220;Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30This is the one I meant when I said, &#8216;A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.&#8217; 31I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.&#8221;</div><div class="p">32Then John gave this testimony: &#8220;I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him. 33And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, &#8216;The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.&#8217; 34I have seen and I testify that this is God&#8217;s Chosen One.&#8221;#1:34 See Isaiah 42:1; many manuscripts is the Son of God.</div>
