Identity, Value, Purpose

DAY 4 OF 5

Purpose

One of the most common pursuits for people today is discovering their purpose. Purpose is commonly defined as the intent in which something is created or simply why something exists. Given the definition, the pursuit of purpose is actually quite simple. In fact, everyone has the same purpose…Glorify God. The reason God created us was to give Him glory.

Now, that may sound unexciting, but when you actually consider what that means, it can genuinely be freeing and help you better navigate what it means to be walking in purpose. Colossians 3:23 tells us that whatever we do, do it as unto the Lord. I often say this when discussing purpose: when people are searching for purpose, they are actually searching for the method by which they bring God glory. 1 Peter 4:10-11 encourages believers to minister according to the gift each one has received.

You may never minister in a pulpit, but the cake that you bake ministers, the business you create ministers, the community center you establish ministers and brings glory to God. We must understand that as long as we understand the central purpose of giving God glory through our lives, how we go about that is just a matter of trusting God and using the gifts and talents that He has given us.

My friend Kevin Wilson of A Christian Podcast takes it further by saying our purpose is to love God, love people, and lead them to Christ. Jesus commands us to love God with all of our heart, soul, and mind and our neighbor as we love ourselves. The great commission of making disciples of Christ is also our responsibility. When you understand these three statements of love God, love people, and lead them to Christ as pillars to your purpose, you’re able to find contentment in being who God has called you to be and doing whatever it is that He has called you to do to the glory of God.
