Finding Favor

Then Peter began to speak: "I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts from every nation the one who fears Him and does what is right." ACTS 10:34-35

Growing up, my mom prayed about everything. Even silly stuff! She’d pray for God to help find her car keys, she’d thank Him when they appeared, she’d pray for a close parking spot, and she’d thank Him when a front-row- Joe opened up. Sometimes I’d think, Sheesh, Mom, just put your keys on the keyholder! Or Why don’t you just show up earlier for a good parking spot? However, I saw how those simple moments built my mom’s faith. And, in turn, it greatly impacted mine too. The pattern here was simple: she prayed without ceasing, she kept her heart in a position that was pleasing to Him, and He’d show up for her—every single time.

Many try to capture favor through other people. It becomes a game of “who you know,” networking with the “right people,” or trying to force something to happen. However, when God’s favor is involved, it always transcends any kind of favor man can provide. His favor doesn’t depend on people, and His favor isn’t forced; it’s showered over those whose hearts are in right standing with Him.

Here are three keys to finding God’s favor according to Scripture:

Fear God. This doesn’t mean being scared or frightened, but rather having a strong desire to obey Him in all things. This kind of fear is healthy, pure, and pleasing in His sight.

Do what is right. Choosing to do the next right thing, in every situation, is paramount. And when your heart is in line with His, doing the right thing comes naturally.

Treat others well. Favor also follows those who treat others around them by the fruit of the Spirit. When you practice love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—yes, even with difficult Karens— God will always bless you in return. (Totally kidding if your name is Karen, by the way. I’ve got an Aunt Karen. She’s nice.)

Chase the heart of Jesus. Because, goodness gracious, His favor is the sweetest.

God, I want my heart to line up with Yours. Your favor is more valuable to me than man's. Help me as I strive to live in right standing with You. Amen.
