Day 5 - LIVING WITH THANKSGIVING
Living with a spirit of thanksgiving is easier said than done. Fostering an attitude of appreciation means recognizing that gratitude is not contingent on favorable circumstances—instead, it’s rooted in trust and submission to God. In the face of adversity, as seen in UNSUNG HERO, the Smallbone family's journey exemplifies reliance on God's provision. Stripped of earthly comforts and security, they discover an opportunity for deeper dependence on God and each other.
The result? The trial becomes an opportunity for growth. The moments of desperation allow miracles to shine through the cracks. And the family unit, led by Helen, learn to appreciate their daily bread (quite literally) and pray for each and every thing they need.
In a powerful moment early in the film, the family sets up a Please & Thank You prayer wall. Some prayers are "Please?" Some prayers are "Thank you!" The Smallbone family comes together and learns to pray for what they need and give thanks for what they receive. This daily spiritual practice has a profound impact on both the parents and the children and demonstrates what it looks like to cultivate a spirit of thanksgiving in all circumstances.
About this Plan
UNSUNG HERO and Kingdom Story Company created this plan to help individuals and groups explore biblical themes of family, community, and faith in the new film from the creators of Jesus Revolution. In this Bible reading plan, you’ll see clips from UNSUNG HERO, a video from the band for KING + COUNTRY, and read reflection questions to help study what the Bible says about the power of family and biblical community.
