God's Masterpiece
It was truly a work of art. Yes, one eye was much larger than the other, the nose resembled a giant squash, and the ears looked like saucers on the side of his head.
But my son’s kindergarten self-portrait unveiled on parents’ night is a masterpiece I’ve treasured through the years.
One year, the Picasso art exhibit came to my hometown. The funny thing was Picasso’s paintings didn’t look much different from Steven’s self-portrait. Eyes were in strange places. Ears weren’t aligned. One woman had a crack running down her face, and another had two noses. The two-nose lady was actually a portrait of a photographer named Dora Maar. I wonder if she was offended. I would have been. That painting sold at Christie’s New York for $67.4 million in 2015. And yet, Steven’s self-portrait is valuable only to me.
I’ve learned that the value of a masterpiece is determined by the artist who created it. The same God who fashioned the twinkling stars in the inky sky, the majestic sea with rolling waves, the soaring birds in kaleidoscopic hues, the dots on a ladybug’s back … that same God created, fashioned, masterfully molded your child. That makes your child and mine much more valuable than any piece of art hanging in a gallery or sold at Christie’s.
Ponder these words:
You created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be. (Psalm 139:13–16)
God shaped your child inside and out. Marvelously made. Breathtakingly beautiful. No mistakes. Nothing left out. Sculpted from nothing into something, all in the secret place of a mother’s womb. And, momma friend, He did the same for you. You are a masterpiece of divine design.
Dear Lord, I thank You for the miracle of my child. Thank You for every part of this masterpiece. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made in Your image. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
