7 Sins That May Hinder God's Plan for You in Your RetirementSample
5. LAZINESS hinders God’s Plan for Your Retirement
Maybe you have been seeking God’s will, but just haven’t been feeling the desire or motivation to get busy with what the plan may be. You’ve worked hard your whole life, being obedient to the alarm clock, your boss, customers, and more. Now, finally, you can relax…
But when that relaxation gets to be so much that you cannot even get started with God’s plan, then perhaps you’re suffering from the sin of LAZINESS.
LAZINESS can strike each one of us, no matter what our intention. It’s just too easy to sleep in, watch another episode, take a nap, or just hang on your phone. It’s so easy because that’s how the enemy wants it – he wants us to just put off getting busy with God’s plan and instead just hang out doing not much of anything.
Maybe you remember this verse from your working days:
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. – Colossians 3:23-24
Back then, when you were still working, this may have seemed more relevant. You had to show up on time, do a good job, and please others. Not just for the paycheck, but also to be “working for the Lord.”
Now things are different, right? No boss. No schedule. No paycheck.
But wait a minute! Your life still belongs to God, doesn’t it? And your daily activities should still be as if “working for the Lord,” right?
This means the LAZINESS doesn’t really belong anywhere in your retirement. Relaxation (within limits) is ok, but certainly not all-out LAZINESS.
In our last reading, we saw that a whole set of “good works” have already been prepared in advance by God, especially for you to do (ref. Eph 2:10). And, now that you are retired, you have the gift of time, experience and even some insights and wisdom that can help others. By doing these “good works,” you are actually helping to build the Kingdom of God, right here on earth.
So, add those good works, and the good intentions and ideas behind them into your daily schedule. Put down the phone, turn off the television, and get active. Do that, and drive the devil’s tool of LAZINESS out of your life!
