Giving Back as God Gave to Us

DAY 2 OF 3

Day 2: The Widow’s Mite

In Mark 12:41-44, Jesus observes people giving offerings at the temple. Many wealthy people are donating large amounts, but then comes a poor widow who puts in just two small coins, worth only a few cents. Jesus calls His disciples over and tells them that this widow has given more than anyone else because “they all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”

This story teaches us that generosity isn’t about the amount we give but the heart behind it. The widow’s sacrifice was precious in God’s eyes because she gave all she had, demonstrating her trust in God to provide. It’s a reminder that sometimes the smallest acts of giving are the most powerful. Our willingness to give, even when it costs us, reflects a deep faith and dependence on God.

As you consider your own resources this season, think about what it would mean to give like the widow. Are there ways you can give sacrificially—not just from abundance, but in a way that requires faith and trust in God’s provision? This Christmas, let us remember those who give selflessly and look for ways to give with a heart that honors God.

Reflection:

• Recognize that generosity isn’t about the amount but the heart behind it.

• Reflect on the widow’s faith and her willingness to give, even from her poverty.

• Consider ways you can give sacrificially, trusting God to provide.

• Pray for a deeper faith that enables you to give wholeheartedly, like the widow.
