Oh Come All Ye Faithful

“Oh come ye, oh come ye to Bethlehem” the second line of this classic carol bids us to take a trip back in time and place to Jesus’ birth. But not for everybody. The song bids the faithful to come. We are to come adore Christ the Lord. But why just the faithful? Because those who do not have faith in Jesus as the Christ have no reason to be joyful because they are not triumphant.

I don’t mean to rain on any parades during such a merry time of year. Although we have commercialized, popularized, and secularized this holiday, it never lost its true meaning. Jesus was born to teach and to sacrifice Himself to save sinners. However, those who do not put their trust in Him have no inheritance with Him in heaven and will not be singing with the angelic citizens of heaven.

This leads to the question, why should we put our faith and trust in Jesus? This song sums things up well with the lines “born the King of angels,” “God of God,” “very God, begotten not created,” and “word of the Father, now in flesh appearing.” As we have discussed previously, Jesus is fully God and fully man. The only perfect sacrifice, the only one capable of covering our sins to give us our free pass to heaven. And so, the only one worthy to receive our glory and exultation.
