Sound of Heaven: A 6-Day Devotional by Danny Gokey

DAY 5 OF 6

I Got You

When writing the song “I Got You,” I immediately thought of Joseph. Just like the song says, “in the pain, in the waiting,” Joseph faced the pain of his brothers selling him off and being lied about by Potiphar’s wife and the waiting of being forgotten about in prison. But the one thing that kept Joseph grounded in every situation was having the Lord. Because of Joseph’s steadfast faith, Pharaoh took notice and elevated him to a position of great power. And in the midst of his trials, Joseph could see that God was working on his behalf and for the greater good. “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” (Genesis 50:20).

The same is true of David, an overlooked shepherd boy who endured years of obstacles to become God’s anointed king. He didn’t fight for position or prematurely try to claim his rightful place. Rather, David confidently waited, remaining humble BEFORE the Lord because the most valuable thing to him was his relationship WITH the Lord. He said, “Who have I in heaven but you? … My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” (Psalm 73:25 - 26). Or look at Job, who went through severe testing, losing everything, including his kids, but still choosing to praise God instead of cursing Him as his wife suggested. He told her, “Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?” (Job 2:10).

It’s easy to believe that God’s “got us” when things are good. But in each of these stories, they continued to believe and sing and praise when things were pretty terrible. Ultimately, their treasure was not in possessions, positions, or other people. Their treasure was in God alone.

‘Cause I got you

In the joy, in the pain, in the waiting

In the flood, in the fire, in the breaking

I’m standing on you, so I won’t be moved

Yeah, I’ll get through

‘Cause I got you

In every season, I’ll keep on singing

In every sorrow, I’ll keep on praising

You’re always with me I know

You’re never letting me go

It’s really the theme of every person in the Bible. Moses. Daniel. Shadrach, Meshach & Abendego. Paul in prison, where he literally sang to break his chains. Countless others. That’s what they could sing then. And that’s what we can sing now. No matter what we face, we can believe that as long as we have God, we have all that we need. Hold onto Him and the hope that comes from knowing that He is always with us and won’t let us go.

“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20)
