Built for More: A Man’s Guide to Strength & PurposeSample

Act Like Men
When Paul commands men to “act like men” (1 Corinthians 16:13), he is not referring to societal stereotypes of masculinity. Instead, he’s calling men to live courageously, selflessly, and intentionally. To act like a man means to reject passivity and take up the mantle of leadership, not with pride but with humility. Biblical manhood isn’t about bravado or dominance; it’s about being a bold warrior for God’s truth while living in community and accountability.
Men are not called to live in isolation. One of the greatest challenges for men today is their tendency to go alone, whether out of pride or fear of vulnerability. But this leads to spiritual weakness and relational distance. Even Jesus, in His moment of most remarkable anguish in the Garden of Gethsemane, invited His closest disciples to pray with Him. If Jesus needed others, how much more do we? True manhood requires finding your tribe—godly men who challenge, support, and encourage you.
Acting like a man also means respecting authority. A biblical man understands that he cannot lead well unless he first learns to submit to Christ's authority and the accountability of others. Submission is not weakness; it’s strength under control. It’s recognizing that we all need guidance, correction, and encouragement to grow into the men God has called us to be.
Paul also emphasizes bravery. In today’s culture, being a man of faith often requires courage to stand for what is right. This includes protecting the vulnerable, standing against injustice, and leading your family in truth and love. Acting like a man means stepping into the hard places of life–not shrinking back when things get difficult.
Reflection
- Do you have a group of godly men who sharpen you spiritually?
- How can you practice humility and accountability in your daily life?
- What does it look like for you to courageously "act like a man" in today’s world?
After you reflect on these questions, bring everything to God in prayer.
