Men of God: Ancient Virtues for Modern WarriorsSample

Joseph's Integrity
“Standing Firm When No One Is Looking”
Joseph was a man who understood the cost of integrity. Genesis 39:8 tells us that as a slave in Potiphar's house, he rose to a position of great responsibility because his character was trustworthy. When faced with temptation from Potiphar's wife, Joseph could have easily rationalized giving in—no one would have known, he was far from home, and he might have gained favor with his master's wife. Instead, he chose the harder path.
Integrity isn't just doing the right thing when others are watching; it's living consistently with your values even when no one will know. Joseph's response wasn't a casual "No thanks"—he literally ran from the situation. "How can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?" he asked in Genesis 39:9. Even when his decision cost him everything and landed him in prison, Joseph maintained his integrity.
In our world today, integrity can seem like an outdated concept. We're bombarded with messages that the ends justify the means or that cutting corners is necessary to get ahead. As men, we face private temptations that no one else sees—the internet browser when we're alone, the expense account when no one's checking, the little lies that seem to make life easier.
I have the same temptations that you do. We are all vulnerable; and from my experience, when I don’t think I’m vulnerable, that’s exactly when I get in trouble. I can get to the point where things that should not make sense, begin to make sense. That needs to always be a red flag that turns me back to God and how important it is to me to be obedient to him.
Joseph reminds us that integrity isn't about reputation—it's about character. It's about recognizing that even when no human sees our choices, God does. And ultimately, living with integrity brings peace that outweighs any temporary benefit of compromise.
Reflection Questions:
- In what areas of your life are you most tempted to compromise your integrity when no one is looking?
- How does Joseph's example challenge your approach to temptation?
- What does it mean to you that God sees everything in your life?
Next Step:
- Make a commitment to immediately remove yourself from situations where your integrity might be compromised. In other words, flee just like Joseph fled.
