The Dove
I saw a meme which made me laugh the other day: ‘As you age, it's ridiculous how fast bird-watching creeps up on you. You spend your whole life being 100% indifferent to birds, and then one day you're like, ‘Wow, is that a low-rumped warbler?’’ I don’t even know what that bird is, but now I kind of want to. Generally speaking, I’m not really into birds, but whether you like birds or not, the dove has a good reputation. It's the bird released at weddings, a global symbol of peace and hope and an emblem of the divine Spirit of God. It may just be a pretty pigeon to some, but there’s no denying it has symbolic significance.
This plan was inspired by a song entitled, ‘The Dove’, written by Kari Jobe and The Belonging Co. It’s poetic and lovely, and connects scriptures from across the Bible, touching on Genesis, Jesus and Pentecost, it drew my attention to this avian symbol that I had hitherto largely ignored. My subsequent study helped me to see the wonderful connections which are divinely woven into the fabric of the Canon.
As we spend some days together considering the dove thematically, I pray we arrive with a deeper understanding, a sense of wonder and a hunger to see the Spirit of God more at work in our lives.
You may want to start by listening to the song, or perhaps listening to the sermon I preached on it, and familiarising yourself with the core passages we will consider, from the Creation account in Genesis, to Noah and his Ark, Jesus’s baptism and the upper room at Pentecost.
About this Plan

This plan was inspired by a song entitled ‘The Dove’. It considers Scriptures from across the Bible, touching on Eden, Noah, Jesus and Pentecost. As we spend some days together considering the dove thematically, this plan gives some theology around the Trinity, especially considering the Creative work of the Holy Spirit, and wrestles with themes of Judgement, New Creation, sin, and grace. As we consider Pentecost, this plan gives a more robust understanding around the power and wonder of the creative work of the Spirit. If you're up for some meat, let's go.
