The DEEP Method: How to Discover, Explore, Engage, Practice God's Word

DAY 1 OF 5

Step One | Discover – Find Truth in God’s Word

Psalm 119:18 – “Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.”

Focus: Learn how to observe what the text says before rushing to interpretation or application.

Before you can apply the Word of God, you must first discover what it says. This requires more than a quick glance at a verse or making inferences without the intended context. Discovery invites you to slow down and sit with Scripture, asking the Holy Spirit to help you see what is already there—but perhaps overlooked. It’s about reading with spiritual expectation.

Too often, we come to the Bible with an agenda. We want a word for our situation, a verse to validate our plans, or a quick encouragement for our day. But the Bible is not a self-help (or get healed quick) book—it’s the living, breathing Word of God. To discover truth, you must approach it on God’s terms. The goal is not to control the Word, but to be shaped and transformed by it.

In this first stage of The DEEP Bible Study Method, begin by choosing a passage—not a single verse, but a contextually complete section (like a Psalm, a parable, or a narrative scene). Read it slowly. Read it again. Observe what stands out. Repetition is not about religious ritual; it’s about training your heart to notice what God intended the recipient to receive.

As you read, ask:

  • What repeated words or ideas appear?
  • What do I see about God—His character, His promises, His commands?
  • What emotions or thoughts are stirred in me as I read?

Don’t rush this process. Discovering truth is like digging for treasure—you may not find gold in the first few seconds, but the deeper you go, the richer it gets.

Reflection Questions:

  1. When was the last time you read Scripture with no agenda other than to meet with God?
  2. What truths did you discover in today’s passage that you hadn’t noticed before?
  3. How might your spiritual hunger grow if you prioritized discovery over information?

Pray This Prayer:
Lord, open my eyes to see the wonder of Your Word. Remove any assumptions, distractions, or pride that keep me from hearing You clearly. I don’t want to just skim the surface—I want to know You. I desire to grow deeper in knowledge and relationship with you. Help me approach Scripture with awe and expectation, ready to discover the truth You’ve written for me. Speak, Lord. I’m listening. In Jesus' name. Amen.

See you on Day Two.
