Learning From Nehemiah

DAY 5 OF 7

Men of the Book

Have you ever had one of those “I'm glad it’s not just me!” moments?

They really are quite refreshing. Shared moments help us feel part of a community, reminding us that we are not alone.

Today’s reading is one of those moments for me. It’s refreshing to hear that others need help understanding the words of God. In a moment of cross-over from the Book of Ezra, today we find Ezra reading from the Book of the Law. The community is gathered together and listening to the story of Scripture.

In this verse, men can see so much of themselves. From the desire to have Scripture at the center of community and life, to the fact that not all of it is easy to understand or know what to do with.

Three things stand out in this one simple verse.

The first is the role and priority of Scripture.

It was vital to the health and success of the Israelites returning from exile that they recommit themselves to their relationship with their God. To do that, it was necessary to know their God and understand the events, commitments, requirements, and expectations that formed the foundation of that relationship.

So, they read God’s Law.

Scripture is God’s gift to us that reveals God to us (2 Timothy 3:16-17). It calls us to be “people of the Book” so we can know Him better. Let us be men of the Book so we can be men of God.

Second, Scripture requires understanding. Ezra the priest brought in others to help make the words of Scripture clear. It’s okay that we don’t understand all of it. It’s also okay (and necessary) to have others help you find clarity in the words of the Bible. Men, invite wise conversation partners into your time with Scripture to help make it clear.

Third, clarity alone is not enough. It must also have meaning and application to real life. The words of Scripture are intended to mean something in our lives, for our lives. Are we men who are shaped by Scripture? Do our lives reflect the truth of who God is?

Prayer: God, thank You for the gift of Scripture. Help me to be a man of Your Book. Amen.

Reflection: Spend more time with God in the pages of His story this week!
