The Artist's Identity: Rooted and SecureSample

When Rejection Comes Knocking
I'll never forget my first major rejection. I'd poured my heart into a body of work for a prestigious show, certain this was my breakthrough moment. The rejection email hit like a punch to the gut. I sat in my studio, surrounded by the pieces they didn't want, feeling like they had rejected not just my art but me.
But then the Holy Spirit reminded me of Jesus—the ultimate creative, rejected by those He came to save. If the Perfect One faced rejection, why did I expect to escape it? This wasn't a comparison to minimize my pain but to give it context. Jesus understands the sting of rejection intimately.
Here's what I've learned: rejection is not a commentary on your worth or calling. It's simply part of the journey. Sometimes it redirects us to better opportunities. Sometimes it refines our work. Sometimes it reveals areas for growth. But it never—never—defines who we are.
When you're rooted in Christ, rejection loses its power to devastate. It still stings—we're human—but it can't shake your foundation. You might feel disappointed, but you won't feel destroyed. Why? Because your identity isn't up for negotiation every time someone says no to your work.
Creative Prayer Exercise: Write a letter to yourself from God's perspective about a recent rejection or disappointment. What would He say about your worth? About your calling? About what He's doing through this closed door? Let His truth speak louder than the rejection.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for understanding rejection so intimately. When doors close and opportunities pass, remind me that You are my foundation. Help me to feel the disappointment without letting it define me. Show me what You're teaching me through each no, and give me courage to keep creating from my secure identity in You. In Your name, Amen.
