DAY 13 OF 30

Substitutions

Substitutions are a natural rhythm—a liturgy—of sport. The moment a whistle blows and a fresh player runs onto the field, the rhythm shifts. Coaches make strategic decisions, teammates adjust, and athletes learn to trust that their time will come. To be substituted can feel humbling—sometimes frustrating—but it also reminds us that no one carries the game alone. The bench is not wasted space; it is a place of readiness, perspective, and support. In sport culture, this liturgy often teaches impatience, envy, or frustration when roles feel unequal.

Spiritually, substitutions mirror the way God shapes us. Paul told Timothy, “Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season.” In other words, always be ready. Sometimes God places us “in the game,” giving us visible opportunities to lead, serve, or speak. Other times, He calls us to the bench, asking us to wait, encourage, and prepare. Both roles are part of His plan. The liturgy of substitution reminds us that faithfulness is not about being seen, but about being ready and willing in every season.

Think about the athlete waiting for their number to be called. They cannot predict the exact moment, but they stay alert, stretched, and engaged. The same is true for us in the Christian life. Seasons of waiting or obscurity are not wasted; they are training grounds for deeper faith. Encouragement from the sidelines, prayer offered quietly, or unseen acts of service can shape the outcome just as much as what happens on the field.

Next time you see or experience a substitution, treat it as a holy moment. Ask: am I willing to serve faithfully even if my role is hidden? Am I ready if God calls me forward? Substitutions remind us that every position—starter or reserve—belongs in God’s greater game plan. When embraced with humility, this liturgy forms us into people who reflect Christ’s servant heart and are always prepared for His call.

Prayer:
“Lord, help me embrace every role You give me with humility and readiness. Teach me to prepare my heart in every season and to serve others joyfully. May I be faithful in the hidden moments, trusting Your timing and honoring You whether I am in the spotlight or on the bench. Amen.”

About this Plan

Formed by the Game: 30 Days of Seeing God in the Liturgies of Sport

Sport shapes how we think, act, and live—whether as athletes, coaches, parents, or fans. This 30-day plan explores the “liturgies” of sport—the ordinary rhythms, habits, and moments—and shows how each can point us toward Jesus. From training and competition to cheering and coaching, discover how God can redeem sport for His glory and your growth. Learn to see the game with kingdom eyes.
