God's Design for Men

DAY 30 OF 30

Holy Men

Once, during winter, I was driving down the highway when a piece of ice suddenly lifted off the car ahead of me and crashed onto my windshield.

With the glass a spiderweb of cracks and my vision completely gone, I somehow got safely off the road.

It was scary. When you suddenly can’t see anything ahead of you, you feel lost and helpless, and the potential for damage is enormous.

Vision is important. If we can’t see where we’re going, we can easily feel disoriented and uncertain. And in a world where masculinity is debated, discussed, and sometimes attacked, it’s crucial to have a clear vision of what it is. Without it, we will be confused about who we are and who God made us to be, and the potential for damage is likewise enormous.

It’s easy to focus on what something shouldn’t be, which can be part of the conversation, but trying to define something by what it shouldn’t be is never inspiring and often unhealthy. Much discussion about masculinity trends this way, and I’ve yet to meet a man who heard those arguments and felt motivated to be a better man.

A good vision gives us something exciting to aim for.

That was the focus of these 30 days.

Today’s verses challenge men to action: fleeing evil, pursuing good, fighting the good fight of faith (1 Timothy 6:11-12). A vision for manhood must include celebrating the good qualities of men and a call to action for living them out.

Jesus, the perfect Man, was perfectly holy and lived out perfect masculinity, showing us all what a perfect man is. His perfection is what we’re aiming for, that we would be holy just like Him.

Men are at their best when we have both a vision for living as men and a call to action. When we catch God’s picture of masculinity and live it out, we are truly “holy”—men who look different from the world because we are walking in the ways of our holy God.

God’s design for men includes everything we’ve covered over these 30 days, so that we would lean into these key parts of who God made us to be as men.

We bless who you are, man of God, as He has created you on purpose. May you thrive in everything He calls you to do, and everything He calls you to be!

Prayer: Father, thank You for these 30 days of devotionals, learning about who You have made me and called me to be as a man! As I walk with You, please continue transforming me into the man we have been discussing, and making me a man who pleases and glorifies You. Amen.

Reflection: What was the most impactful part of this devotional for you, and why?

About this Plan

God's Design for Men

The term "toxic masculinity" has been used to call out men's sinful behavior, but it doesn’t inspire men to greater things. We need a vision of masculinity that is good, biblical, and Christ-like—God’s ideal design for men, all that He wanted them to be when He created them as men on purpose. Jesus, the perfect Man, shows us a perfect picture of what masculinity was meant for. God’s Son shows us what men should be aiming at, and God’s Word shows us how to get there in this 30-day devotional! Written by Chris Walker.
