Matthew: Healing in His PresenceSample

Jesus Heals the Roman Centurion’s Servant
I think it would be so cool to have met this Roman centurion. First of all, he is a caring person. As an employer, he goes out of his way to get help for his hurt employee. His servant meant a lot to him because he risks his reputation to ask Jesus to heal him. This powerful soldier demonstrates he's powerless to heal his suffering servant - but he believes Jesus can.
Faith is the key message in this story. The first words out of the centurion's mouth were, “Lord.” He recognizes that Jesus has the power to heal his servant. And remember, he's doing this in front of Jesus' followers. At this time, Jews were living under Roman rule, so it would have been very strange to see a Roman leader humble himself before a Jew.
Then, he tells us what authority looks like. He is a man of authority with soldiers serving under him. If he tells them to do something, they do it. His words have power because of his position and who he is. He makes things happen.
He believes Jesus is the ultimate authority. The centurion understood the power of submission under authority. He truly believes Jesus can heal his servant with just a word, not needing to physically touch him. He doesn't feel worthy to have Jesus come to his house. That's humility! And look at how Jesus responds. He is astonished! "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith." (v. 10)
This man’s humble and faithful approach is eye opening. He doesn't demand that Jesus heal the servant, use his power to force Jesus to come, nor feel he deserves Jesus to heal his servant. He believes Jesus can heal his servant, if Jesus chooses to do so. "And Jesus said to the centurion, 'Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.' And his servant was healed at that moment.'" (v. 13)
Questions:
1. How does the centurion’s humility and faith challenge the way you approach Jesus when you’re asking for help or healing?
2. What might it look like in your life to fully submit to Jesus’ authority, trusting His timing and way - even when it feels uncertain?
3. Have you ever experienced or witnessed the power of believing “just say the word” in your prayers or faith journey? How did that impact you?
