Mephibosheth - Part 2
The story of Mephibosheth does not end with the restoration of land or wealth. The greater miracle was his invitation to sit continually at the king’s table. This seat symbolised identity, dignity, and belonging. Though he remained crippled, his condition was no longer the headline of his life—his position was.
When Mephibosheth sat at David’s table, his broken feet were hidden beneath the cloth. His weakness was real, yet it was covered by honour. This is the power of grace. In Christ, our scars and struggles may not disappear instantly, but they are no longer what defines us. Grace clothes us in righteousness, covers our shame, and places us among the family of God.
Too often, believers live as spiritual orphans, approaching God as if they were outsiders hoping to be noticed. Yet the gospel declares adoption. Through Jesus, we are not merely forgiven—we are brought into full family rights. We are heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ. Prayer is not begging at the edge of the palace; it is conversation at the Father’s table.
The Apostle Paul carried what he called a “thorn in the flesh,” something that would not leave despite his prayers. God’s answer was not removal but sufficiency: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” This is the mystery of the table. Our weakness remains, but God’s strength shines through it. We do not need to hide humanity to be accepted. At the table, weakness becomes the canvas on which God paints His glory.
The invitation is to come—not when life looks perfect, but as you are. The King’s kindness is not contingent on a condition. Lo-Debar is not a permanent address. Shame is not the final name. The covenant love of God seeks, restores, and seats His people in honour.
At the table, there is nourishment for the weary, comfort for the sorrowful, and belonging for the forgotten. Here, adoption replaces orphanhood. Inheritance replaces loss. Grace replaces shame. Every believer is called not to live as a servant in fear but as a son or daughter with confidence.
The lesson is simple yet profound: it is not your condition but your position that matters most. In Christ, you are seated at the table. You are family. And once seated, you are covered by grace.
