7 Keys for Spiritual Warfare

DAY 1 OF 8

Some people mistakenly believe that spiritual warfare is a gift that only certain believers have. But in fact, spiritual warfare is an instruction for every follower of Christ. The apostle Paul exhorts us to be strong in the power of the Lord, resist the devil’s schemes, and stand against the principalities and powers of darkness.

Every believer is called to be empowered and trained in spiritual warfare. Let’s look at seven keys we can apply from the story of David and Goliath, found in 1 Samuel 17.

1. SPIRITUAL WARRIORS SEE KINGDOM ASSIGNMENTS, NOT JUST NATURAL TASKS

Most people know the story of David and Goliath, and we celebrate the moment when the young man takes down the giant with a stone from his slingshot! But David’s story starts well before he arrives on the battlefield.

David was looking after the sheep, and his father Jesse instructed him to take some bread and cheese to his brothers who were at war. David’s natural task was to take his brothers some food, but his kingdom assignment was to take down the enemy!

If we are going to engage in spiritual warfare, we have to understand the importance of seeing in the spirit realm. We might be in the middle of a natural task, but God is wanting to get our attention on a kingdom assignment – to go to prayer and stand against the enemy.

David could easily have done what Jesse asked and then gone home without stepping into the fight. In order to engage in spiritual warfare, we have to get our eyes off the natural and discern what is going on in the spiritual realm. To partner with God in spiritual warfare, let’s have the same mindset as Jesus when He said, “I only do what I see my Father doing.” Ask the Lord to show you His assignment, and partner in prayer with His daily intention to see His kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven.

We have been given every weapon that we need for spiritual warfare – we have Jesus Christ, the written Word of God, and the power of the Holy Spirit. But how do we practically stand against the devil’s schemes, and what does it look like to engage the power of prayer in our everyday lives?
