Bread for the Journey

DAY 17 OF 30

Undecided

One of the hardest things in life is being caught in a state of indecision. That moment when we're not sure what step to take, or what path to choose. We reflect and analyze, but doubt overwhelms us, making us feel even more undecided.

There are trivial matters we have to decide on that don't make us fear making a mistake. These are the ones we do daily and are used to, like what to eat, what color to choose, what shoes to buy, etc.

The difficulty in making decisions lies in not knowing what is best, what is wisest, what will turn out to be the best decision. This happens because we don't know the future, and we wish we knew the results of our decision beforehand.

This is where prayer comes into play—that powerful tool God has given us so we can consult Him and seek His divine direction. The Lord tells us: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” (Psalm 32:8, NIV) His will is to give direction to the lives of His children. God wants to help us; He knows what is best, what steps we should take.

When we go to the Lord in prayer, we are letting Him know that we can't do it alone, that we need Him. We want to hear His advice, lay our doubts before Him, tell Him about our confusion and how insecure we feel about making this or that decision. He hears us; He understands us.

There are momentous decisions that are clear as water. God has provided His counsel in the Scriptures, and they give us direction, eliminating doubt about what we should choose. Issues like the way of salvation, of righteousness, of truth, of what is right have been revealed to us. That's why we have that beautiful verse that declares: "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." (Psalm 119:105, NIV)

We all go through the path of indecision; we all feel confused at some point in our lives. There will be times when we decide correctly and others when we're not so accurate. Anyway, if we love the Lord and our genuine desire is to do His will, let's remember the wise words of King Solomon: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." (Proverbs 3:5-6, NIV)
