Choose Your Word! A New Year’s Practice for a Life of SurrenderSample

At the beginning of every new year, we are bombarded by health-related advertisements. Are you considering any new physical exercise routines? I recently saw an ad for an exercise machine meant to target your abdominal muscles—to sculpt the exterior. While physical exercise is critical, I want to encourage you not to neglect your inner life. In addition to an exercise regimen, I recommend a prayerful and thoughtful way to target the interior—a beneficial practice for your next season and the rest of your days.
Every year, I select one word for personal or ministry focus. One meaningful word based on Scripture and relevant to my current circumstance. Something that will give me perspective and energize my heart, soul, and mind. A powerful keyword can also lend strength to an organization. In our ministry, we have affectionately dubbed this practice WAVFTY: word and verse(s) for the year.
Regardless of your life season—whether foundational, definitional, implementational, or concluding (these periods average about 20 years each)—I suggest you pick a WAVFTY. And since biblical truth and God’s character once applied should never then be abandoned, I’ve lengthened my neologism to WAVFTY-AB: word and verse(s) for the year and beyond.
When you’ve chosen a word and verse, get in touch with me through the RREACH organizational website. I’d love to hear from you.
