Joy in Serving: Devotions From Time of Grace MinistrySample

My God: Exclusive
A man I know who grew up in central Michigan told me once that you can’t root for both Michigan State and Michigan. You have to pick one or the other. You can’t love them both. It’s either green and white or maize and blue.
Satan will present you with rationalizations to encourage you to make deals in your mind and play a variety of games. He tried to get Jesus himself to play it both ways. He promised that Jesus could avoid suffering and the cross and still accomplish his mission. “Jesus said to him, ‘Away from me, Satan! For it is written: “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only”’” (Matthew 4:10). It was the Father, not Satan, who defined Jesus’ mission.
I will never forget the words of a recovering alcoholic who told me once that the bottle had become his god. Where do you go most often for a feeling of self-worth, for comfort, for your identity when you’re stressed or afraid?
