 <div class="label">38</div><div class="s1">Hezekiah&#8217;s Illness</div><div class="p"> 1In those days Hezekiah became ill and was at the point of death. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz went to him and said, &#8220;This is what the Lord says: Put your house in order, because you are going to die; you will not recover.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 2Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the Lord, 3&#8220;Remember, Lord, how I have walked before you faithfully and with wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes.&#8221; And Hezekiah wept bitterly.</div><div class="p"> 4Then the word of the Lord came to Isaiah: 5&#8220;Go and tell Hezekiah, &#8216;This is what the Lord, the God of your father David, says: I have heard your prayer and seen your tears; I will add fifteen years to your life. 6And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. I will defend this city.</div><div class="p"> 7&#8220;&#8198;&#8216;This is the Lord&#8217;s sign to you that the Lord will do what he has promised: 8I will make the shadow cast by the sun go back the ten steps it has gone down on the stairway of Ahaz.&#8217;&#8198;&#8221; So the sunlight went back the ten steps it had gone down.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="p"> 9A writing of Hezekiah king of Judah after his illness and recovery:</div><div class="q1"> 10I said, &#8220;In the prime of my life</div><div class="q2">must I go through the gates of death</div><div class="q2">and be robbed of the rest of my years?&#8221;</div><div class="q1"> 11I said, &#8220;I will not again see the Lord himself</div><div class="q2">in the land of the living;</div><div class="q1">no longer will I look on my fellow man,</div><div class="q2">or be with those who now dwell in this world.</div><div class="q1"> 12Like a shepherd&#8217;s tent my house</div><div class="q2">has been pulled down and taken from me.</div><div class="q1">Like a weaver I have rolled up my life,</div><div class="q2">and he has cut me off from the loom;</div><div class="q2">day and night you made an end of me.</div><div class="q1"> 13I waited patiently till dawn,</div><div class="q2">but like a lion he broke all my bones;</div><div class="q2">day and night you made an end of me.</div><div class="q1"> 14I cried like a swift or thrush,</div><div class="q2">I moaned like a mourning dove.</div><div class="q1">My eyes grew weak as I looked to the heavens.</div><div class="q2">I am being threatened; Lord, come to my aid!&#8221;</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 15But what can I say?</div><div class="q2">He has spoken to me, and he himself has done this.</div><div class="q1">I will walk humbly all my years</div><div class="q2">because of this anguish of my soul.</div><div class="q1"> 16Lord, by such things people live;</div><div class="q2">and my spirit finds life in them too.</div><div class="q1">You restored me to health</div><div class="q2">and let me live.</div><div class="q1"> 17Surely it was for my benefit</div><div class="q2">that I suffered such anguish.</div><div class="q1">In your love you kept me</div><div class="q2">from the pit of destruction;</div><div class="q1">you have put all my sins</div><div class="q2">behind your back.</div><div class="q1"> 18For the grave cannot praise you,</div><div class="q2">death cannot sing your praise;</div><div class="q1">those who go down to the pit</div><div class="q2">cannot hope for your faithfulness.</div><div class="q1"> 19The living, the living&#8212;they praise you,</div><div class="q2">as I am doing today;</div><div class="q1">parents tell their children</div><div class="q2">about your faithfulness.</div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"> 20The Lord will save me,</div><div class="q2">and we will sing with stringed instruments</div><div class="q1">all the days of our lives</div><div class="q2">in the temple of the Lord.</div><div class="p"> 21Isaiah had said, &#8220;Prepare a poultice of figs and apply it to the boil, and he will recover.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 22Hezekiah had asked, &#8220;What will be the sign that I will go up to the temple of the Lord?&#8221;</div>

 <div class="label">9</div><div class="p"> 1And he said to them, &#8220;Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has come with power.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">The Transfiguration</div><div class="p"> 2After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them. 3His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. 4And there appeared before them Elijah and Moses, who were talking with Jesus.</div><div class="p"> 5Peter said to Jesus, &#8220;Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters&#8212;one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.&#8221; 6(He did not know what to say, they were so frightened.)</div><div class="p"> 7Then a cloud appeared and covered them, and a voice came from the cloud: &#8220;This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 8Suddenly, when they looked around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.</div><div class="p"> 9As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus gave them orders not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10They kept the matter to themselves, discussing what &#8220;rising from the dead&#8221; meant.</div><div class="p"> 11And they asked him, &#8220;Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah must come first?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 12Jesus replied, &#8220;To be sure, Elijah does come first, and restores all things. Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected? 13But I tell you, Elijah has come, and they have done to him everything they wished, just as it is written about him.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus Heals a Boy Possessed by an Impure Spirit</div><div class="p"> 14When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him.</div><div class="p"> 16 &#8220;What are you arguing with them about?&#8221; he asked.</div><div class="p"> 17A man in the crowd answered, &#8220;Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 19 &#8220;You unbelieving generation,&#8221; Jesus replied, &#8220;how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 20So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.</div><div class="p"> 21Jesus asked the boy&#8217;s father, &#8220;How long has he been like this?&#8221;</div><div class="p">&#8220;From childhood,&#8221; he answered. 22&#8220;It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 23 &#8220;&#8198;&#8216;If you can&#8217;?&#8221; said Jesus. &#8220;Everything is possible for one who believes.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 24Immediately the boy&#8217;s father exclaimed, &#8220;I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 25When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. &#8220;You deaf and mute spirit,&#8221; he said, &#8220;I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 26The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, &#8220;He&#8217;s dead.&#8221; 27But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up.</div><div class="p"> 28After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, &#8220;Why couldn&#8217;t we drive it out?&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 29He replied, &#8220;This kind can come out only by prayer.#9:29 Some manuscripts prayer and fasting&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time</div><div class="p"> 30They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were, 31because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, &#8220;The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after three days he will rise.&#8221; 32But they did not understand what he meant and were afraid to ask him about it.</div><div class="p"> 33They came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, &#8220;What were you arguing about on the road?&#8221; 34But they kept quiet because on the way they had argued about who was the greatest.</div><div class="p"> 35Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, &#8220;Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 36He took a little child whom he placed among them. Taking the child in his arms, he said to them, 37&#8220;Whoever welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me does not welcome me but the one who sent me.&#8221;</div><div class="s1">Whoever Is Not Against Us Is for Us</div><div class="p"> 38&#8220;Teacher,&#8221; said John, &#8220;we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we told him to stop, because he was not one of us.&#8221;</div><div class="p"> 39 &#8220;Do not stop him,&#8221; Jesus said. &#8220;For no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me, 40for whoever is not against us is for us. 41Truly I tell you, anyone who gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to the Messiah will certainly not lose their reward.</div><div class="s1">Causing to Stumble</div><div class="p"> 42 &#8220;If anyone causes one of these little ones&#8212;those who believe in me&#8212;to stumble, it would be better for them if a large millstone were hung around their neck and they were thrown into the sea. 43If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.
