"You Are" Devotional
Crowder
“You are constant in my wandering / You are brighter than the dark in me / You are the Love that sets me free / You are faithful, You are faithful, You are”
Few things hurt like a broken promise. Few things wound like dashed expectations. From a forgotten appointment to a tragic divorce, our lives bear the scars of the moments when we held out hope that something would happen – that someone would do or say something in particular – only to find that it never happened or didn’t turn out like we planned. The promise wasn’t kept. The expectations weren’t met.
When we are broken by the unfaithful people or events in our lives – whether accidental or not – we often try to put ourselves back together. We withdraw from others. We harden our hearts. Slowly but surely, we set our expectations aside, believing we will just be let down in the end. Instead of holding out hope, our fears take over and overwhelm us.
David reminds us in the Psalms that we are not alone in these moments, and that there is One who will never, ever let us down. God is always faithful. God is always there. In fact, David goes to great lengths to describe the dependability of God in Psalm 36.
As David reminds us, God is the only constant that we can count on. When those around us have let us down or our own plans lie in ruins, God is the refuge where we can find shelter. God sustains us. God gives us hope. God puts us back together.
