Jesusā Authority Challenged
1 And it happened that on one of the days while#ļ»æ*Here āwhileā is supplied as a component of the temporal genitive absolute participle (āwas teachingā) he was teaching the people in the temple courts#ļ»æ*Here ācourtsā is supplied to distinguish this area from the interior of the temple building itself and proclaiming the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes approached together with the elders 2and said, saying to him, āTell us, by what authority you are doing these things, or who is the one who gave you this authority? 3And he answered and#ļ»æ*Here āandā is supplied because the previous participle (āansweredā) has been translated as a finite verb said to them, āI also will ask you a question, and you tell me: 4The baptism of Johnāwas it from heaven or from men? 5And they discussed this#ļ»æ*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation with one another, saying, āIf we say āFrom heaven,ā he will say, āWhy did you not believe him?ā 6But if we say, āFrom men,ā all the people will stone us to death, because they are convinced that John was a prophet.ā 7And they replied that they did not know where it was from. 8And Jesus said to them, āNeither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.ā
The Parable of the Tenant Farmers in the Vineyard
9And he began to tell the people this parable: āA man#Some manuscripts have āA certain manā planted a vineyard, and leased it to tenant farmers, and went on a journey for a long time. 10And at the proper time he sent a slave to the tenant farmers, so that they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenant farmers sent him away empty-handed after#ļ»æ*Here āafterā is supplied as a component of the participle (ābeatingā) which is understood as temporal beating him.#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation 11And he proceeded to send another slave, but they beat and dishonored that one also, and#ļ»æ*Here āandā is supplied because the two previous participles (ābeatā and ādishonoredā) have been translated as finite verbs sent him#ļ»æ*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation away empty-handed. 12And he proceeded to send a third, but they wounded and#ļ»æ*Here āandā is supplied because the previous participle (āwoundedā) has been translated as a finite verb threw out this one also. 13So the owner of the vineyard said, āWhat should I do? I will send my beloved son; perhaps they will respect him.ā 14But when#ļ»æ*Here āwhenā is supplied as a component of the participle (āsawā) which is understood as temporal the tenant farmers saw him, they began to reason#ļ»æ*The imperfect tense has been translated as ingressive here (ābegan to reasonā) with one another, saying, āThis is the heir. Let us kill him so that the inheritance will become ours!ā 15And they threw him out of the vineyard and#ļ»æ*Here āandā is supplied because the previous participle (āthrewā) has been translated as a finite verb killed him.#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16He will come and destroy those tenant farmers and give the vineyard to others.ā And when they#ļ»æ*Here āwhenā is supplied as a component of the participle (āheardā) which is understood as temporal heard this,#*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation they said, āMay this never happen!ā 17But he looked intently at them and#ļ»æ*Here āandā is supplied because the previous participle (ālooked intently atā) has been translated as a finite verb said, āWhat then is this that is written:
āThe stone which the builders rejected,
this has become the cornerstone.ā#Literally āthe head of the cornerā
18Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and the one on whom it fallsāit will crush him!ā 19And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay their#ļ»æ*Literally ātheā; the Greek article is used here as a possessive pronoun hands on him at that same hour, and they were afraid of the people, for they knew that he had told this parable with reference to them.
Paying Taxes to Caesar
20And they watched him#ļ»æ*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translation closely and#ļ»æ*Here āandā is supplied because the previous participle (āwatched closelyā) has been translated as a finite verb sent spies who pretended they were upright, in order that they could catch him in a statement, so that they could hand him over to the authority and the jurisdiction of the governor. 21And they asked him, saying, āTeacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and do not show partiality,#Literally āreceive faceā but teach the way of God in truth. 22Is it permitted for us to pay taxes#Or āthe tribute taxā to Caesar or not?ā 23But seeing through their craftiness, he said to them, 24āShow me a denarius! Whose image and inscription does it have?ā And they answered and#ļ»æ*Here āandā is supplied because the previous participle (āansweredā) has been translated as a finite verb said,#Some manuscripts have āAnd they saidā āCaesarās.ā 25So he said to them, āWell then, give to Caesar the things of Caesar, and to God the things of God!ā 26And they were not able to catch him#ļ»æ*Here the direct object is supplied from context in the English translationļ»æ#Some manuscripts explicitly state āhimā in a statement in the sight of the people, and astonished at his answer, they became silent.
A Question About Marriage and the Resurrection
27Now some of the Sadduceesāwho deny that there is a resurrection#Literally āresurrection not to existāācame up and#ļ»æ*Here āandā is supplied because the previous participle (ācame upā) has been translated as a finite verb asked him, 28saying, āTeacher, Moses wrote for us if someoneās brother dies having a wife, and this man is childless, that his brother should take the wife and father#Literally āraise upā descendants for his brother. 29Now there were seven brothers, and the first took a wife and#ļ»æ*Here āandā is supplied because the previous participle (ātookā) has been translated as a finite verb died childless, 30and the second, 31and the third took her, and likewise also the seven did not leave children and died. 32Finally the woman also died. 33Therefore in the resurrection, the womanāwhose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.ā 34And Jesus said to them, āThe sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, 35but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, 36for they are not even able to die any longer, because they are like the angels and are sons of God, because they#ļ»æ*Here ābecauseā is supplied as a component of the participle (āareā) which is understood as causal are sons of the resurrection. 37But that the dead are raised, even Moses revealed in the passage about#ļ»æ*The words āthe passage aboutā are not in the Greek text but are implied; here a common form of rabbinic citation is being used to refer to an Old Testament passage the bush, when he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. 38Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to him!ā 39And some of the scribes answered and#ļ»æ*Here āandā is supplied because the previous participle (āansweredā) has been translated as a finite verb said, āTeacher, you have spoken well.ā 40For they no longer dared to ask him anything.
Davidās Son and Lord
41But he said to them, āIn what sense do they say that the Christ is Davidās son? 42For David himself says in the book of Psalms,
āThe Lord said to my Lord,
āSit at my right hand,
43until I make your enemies
a footstool for your feet.ā ā#A quotation from Ps 110:1
44David therefore calls him āLord,ā and how is he his son?ā
Warning to Beware of the Scribes
45And while#ļ»æ*Here āwhileā is supplied as a component of the temporal genitive absolute participle (āwere listeningā) all the people were listening, he said to the disciples,#Some manuscripts have āto his disciplesā 46āBeware of the scribes, who like walking around in long robes and who love greetings in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets, 47who devour the houses of widows and pray lengthy prayers for the sake of appearance. These will receive more severe condemnation!ā
