In the Past, Pts. 1 and 2

After severely warning his readers about the dangers of falling away, the writer of Hebrews softens his tone. By alluding to their faithfulness in the past, he warmly and lovingly expresses confidence that they will endure to the end and encourages them to continue in their faith.

He gives one more allusion to past events, this time to an Old Testament scene in which God made a promise to Abraham. Because there is no higher being by which God could make an oath, God swore by himself to show the certainty of his promise. The author then seems to connect the sureness of God’s oath to the two components of God’s promise in Psalm 110:4, where David writes, “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.’” This promise is then applied to Jesus, who, according to the upcoming chapter, is that promised priest.

Indeed, we have a sure anchor of the soul; or, you might even say, we have a sure hope …
