God's Word Through African Eyes: A 30-Day DevotionalMuestra
Delegating Responsibility: a devotion on leadership
From an Africa Study Bible Proverbs & Stories note:
Moses was at his breaking point. The people kept making demands that Moses considered unrealistic. They appeared ungrateful. Moses questioned his own ability to lead them. He said he preferred to die rather than to be the leader of such difficult people. Our leaders sometimes have a similar experience. People make demands and unhealthy comparisons. They wear out their leaders. Moses did not allow that to happen. He pleaded with God for help.
God told Moses to gather seventy elders and “they will bear the burden of the people along with you.” A Sesotho proverb makes the point of the importance of teamwork, Ntja-peli ha e hloloe ke sabata, which means, “Two hunting dogs are likely to catch a prey.”
Many leaders today exhaust themselves trying to solve problems. It is hard for them to refuse additional responsibilities. It is difficult for them to ask someone else to do part of their work. It is difficult for them to say no. Such leaders can learn from Moses who told God about his leadership problems. God intervened and helped the situation.
Today:
If you feel overwhelmed by your responsibilities, bring your issues to God and allow Him to mentor you. Ask God to spare you the hardships of trying to lead others by yourself and to show you how to delegate responsibilities. Look for someone near you who leads well. Ask them to help and mentor you. If you are seasoned leader, look for someone you can mentor.
