El Elyon: Most High RulerMuestra
Abram acknowledged El Elyon as the source of the victory by offering a tithe to Him.
Melchizedek’s blessing of Abram was also a reminder that God had already promised Abram, when he first called him out of Ur of the Chaldees, that He would be the source of Abram’s blessing:
“I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great” (Genesis 12:2).
The text tells us that Abram responded to this reminder that God was the source of this victory and ultimately the source of his future blessing by offering a tithe to Melchizedek on behalf of El Elyon: “He gave him a tenth of all” (Genesis 14:20). Our tithes and offerings are in the same way a declaration that God is our Source, and because He is the possessor of all things, we will trust in Him to provide our needs.
Abram could confidently reject the king of Sodom’s manipulative offer of the spoils of war because in the offering of his tithe he had already acknowledged God Most High as his source and provider.
We are all tempted repeatedly to confuse our resources (jobs, money, homes, etc.) as our source. When we grasp and grab after these things to supply our needs, they become idols, replacing our worship of the one true God. We must be reminded, like Abraham, that God Most High is the “Possessor of heaven and earth"(Genesis 14:21), and we must learn to give Him the glory that is His due. In so doing, we will come to know that His name is El Elyon.
