The Well of Wonder

I recently took my three-year-old son, who is a serious dinosaur enthusiast, to a natural history museum for the first time. To say he was excited is an understatement. I lost count of how many times he said, “Wow”, or “Whoooaaa”, or “Daddy look! a T-Rex!”. My heart was exploding watching this little boy experience child-like (literally) wonder and awe, trying to express the inexpressible as he observed these realistic life-size dinosaurs for the first time.

It got me thinking. When was the last time I felt an inexpressible child-like wonder about God? As someone who could spend hours thinking and talking about God, this was a real challenge for me.

In some senses, our relationship with God is like a romance. In the early days of a relationship, there’s a real spark of romance and passion. But as the years roll on and more things vie for our attention, if we’re not careful, the romance can be overtaken by routine and what was once magnificent can become mundane.

That’s why the well of wonder is so important. In a marriage, the best way to maintain the spark is by cultivating a passion for your spouse. It requires effort.

It is the same with our relationship with God. We must continually dig deep and draw from the well of wonder in order to preserve and grow the feeling of wonder for who God is and all that he is doing in our lives.

Question
What is one thing you can do today to draw deeply from the well of wonder?
