What Trees Can Teach Us About God and His KingdomMuestra
Singing trees
Throughout the Bible, people are called to praise God. He is the great Creator of heaven and earth, He has the whole world in his hand, and He is good and gracious towards sinful people. In short, we have very many reasons to rejoice and to praise the Lord. And we should, since He is worthy of all honor!
But in various Psalms and prophecies, we read how not just people but all creation is called to praise Him! Mountains and hills, trees and animals are all singing and shouting for joy.
In Romans 8, we see a very different picture. We read how “the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time”, “not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it” (ESV). When humans sinned, the consequences were disastrous. Not just for people, but for all of creation. God’s good creation is suffering under the curse of sin and death. But there is hope. God offers reconciliation and restoration. That is good reason to sing! We praise God for his salvation, and we are longing for the day when sin and evil will be dealt with completely and definitely. Then our joy will be complete. Even the trees will sing and clap their hands.
