Daily Bible Reading - October 2020: God’s Life-Giving Word of Justice and PeaceMuestra
October 5
Introduction
Today we begin reading excerpts from the book of the prophet Isaiah. The prophet lived in Jerusalem in the latter half of the eighth century B.C. As God’s prophet, his messages were to the people of Judah (the Southern Kingdom) and its capital Jerusalem. At the core of these messages is a call to a life of righteousness and justice because of the nation’s sin and disobedience toward God, and he warned that failure to listen to God would bring doom and destruction. Today’s reading describes God reprimanding the people of Judah.
Scripture Reading
Isaiah 1:1-20
Today’s Key Verse: Isaiah 1:17
[The LORD said:] “…learn to do right. See that justice is done—help those who are oppressed, give orphans their rights, and defend widows.”
Reflect
Why does Isaiah tell the people that they are doomed (verse 4)? What does he say that God is teaching them (verses 10-20)? Reread verses 18-20. What promise is given if the people obey God? Based on today’s reading, what has God taught you?
Pray
Holy God, teach me to do what is right and to see that justice is done. Cleanse me from my sin and teach me to obey your teachings. Amen.
Prayer Concern
Widows and orphans
Tomorrow’s Reading
