Finding Deep and Lasting Joy in JesusMuestra
Real and lasting joy is a gift of the triune God
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in My name, He will give it to you. Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” (John 16:23-24)
The New Testament speaks a lot about God the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ) and the Holy Spirit. They are three Persons, but one God. This theme of the trinity also pops up when studying Bible verses about joy.
In Galatians 5:22, the apostle Paul mentions joy as fruit of the Holy Spirit. In John 14:26 and John 15:26, we read that the Spirit is sent by the Father and the Son. And in John 16:23-24, Jesus encourages his disciples to ask the Father in Jesus’ name, so that they will receive whatever they need “that your joy may be full”. These verses make clear that God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit all work together for the joy of believers.
Luke 11:9-13 helps us to understand what the verses in John 16 mean. Jesus says that his disciples will receive “whatever they ask in his name”. But Luke explains that God only gives us what is really good for us, as a good human father would do. Therefore, He may not grant our wish for a new car or an excellent job offer. But He will always grant our prayer to be filled with the Holy Spirit — which will lead to us being filled with love and joy.
